Church sound: speakers, gain, feedback and the room itself
Church sound is where the most complaints come from and the least budget goes. The good news is that most of what makes a system sound bad is free to fix: placement, gain and the room, in that order.
Speakers: coverage before power
The most common mistake is buying louder speakers to solve a coverage problem.
Aim at people, not walls. A speaker pointed at the back wall delivers most of its energy to a hard surface that reflects it back as mush. Angled down into the congregation, the same speaker sounds clearer and needs less level.
Height helps. Speakers well above head height reach the back without deafening the front rows. At ear level, the front gets punished so the back can hear.
Two modest, well-placed speakers beat one loud pair. If the room is wide or has an awkward shape, coverage is the problem and more power makes it worse — louder mush is still mush.
Delay for deep rooms. In a long building, additional speakers halfway back need a small delay so their sound arrives with the main system rather than ahead of it. Without it you get an echo that no amount of EQ removes.
Gain structure
The least glamorous topic in audio and the one that separates a clean system from a permanently disappointing one.
Every signal passes through several stages — preamp, channel fader, group, master, amplifier — and each has a level. Gain structure means setting each so the signal is strong enough to be well above the noise, and low enough not to clip.
- Start at the inputWith the fader down, speak or play at realistic performance level and raise the input gain until the meter sits healthily, peaking well short of clipping.
- Then use the faderSet the mix with faders around their nominal position, not pinned at the top or scraped along the bottom.
- Leave the master aloneThe master should sit near nominal. If it is at maximum, something upstream is set too low.
The symptom of getting it wrong: everything sounds thin and noisy, and turning it up makes it noisier rather than louder. That is a signal that was too quiet at the input being amplified later, noise and all.
Set gain with the actual person, at the actual volume they will speak. A soundcheck at conversational level guarantees a wrong setting when they start preaching.
Feedback
Feedback is a loop: the microphone hears the speaker, the system amplifies it, the speaker plays it louder, and round it goes.
Break the loop physically first.
- Get the microphone behind the speakers. A microphone in front of a loudspeaker will always be fighting.
- Point it away. Most microphones are directional; use that. Aim the least sensitive part of the pattern at the nearest speaker.
- Get it closer to the mouth. A microphone close to the source needs far less gain, and less gain is less loop.
- Turn off what nobody is using. An open microphone on an empty lectern is a feedback path for free.
Then, and only then, equalise. Notching out the ringing frequency helps at the margin. It cannot fix a microphone standing in front of a speaker, and churches that lean on EQ end up with a system that sounds hollow and still feeds back.
The room
The building is part of your sound system, and in most churches it is the least cooperative part.
Hard, parallel surfaces produce reverb: sound bouncing long enough to blur the next word. It is why a sanctuary can be loud and unintelligible at the same time.
What helps, cheaply:
- People. A full room is a treated room; test with a congregation, not an empty building.
- Soft furnishings. Carpet, curtains, padded seating, banners on a rear wall.
- Aim, again. Less energy into hard surfaces means less to come back.
What helps properly: absorption on the first reflection points and the rear wall. This is real acoustic treatment, and in a hard room it will do more than any equipment purchase.
What does not help: turning it up. Reverb scales with the sound feeding it.
DI boxes
A DI box takes an unbalanced, high-impedance signal — a keyboard, an acoustic guitar with a pickup, a laptop — and converts it to a balanced one the desk can receive over a long cable without picking up hum.
You need one when:
- The instrument has an unbalanced output and the cable run is long.
- You are getting hum or buzz from a keyboard or laptop feed.
- You need to split a signal between an amplifier and the desk.
Most churches need one or two. If a laptop feeding the desk buzzes, a DI box with a ground lift is almost always the answer.
Where to start
If the sound is poor and you do not know why, in order:
- Check speaker aim. Free, and often transformative.
- Reset gain structure from the input up.
- Move the microphones relative to the speakers.
- Add soft surfaces where the reflections are worst.
- Then consider buying something.
