Do you need a capture card for church streaming?

You've got a camera and a computer, and you want the camera's picture inside OBS or vMix. But the camera has an HDMI socket and the computer doesn't take HDMI in. That gap is exactly what a capture card fills — but it's not the only way across. Here's when you need one and when you don't.

What a capture card actually does

Your computer's HDMI port sends video out to a screen. It can't take video in from a camera. A capture card is a small box (or internal card) that takes the camera's HDMI (or SDI) signal and turns it into something the computer can read — usually over USB. Your streaming software then sees it as just another camera.

So the real question isn't "do I need a capture card?" — it's "how do I get my camera into my software?" A capture card is one answer. There are others.

When you DO need a capture card

You need one when your camera outputs HDMI or SDI — which is true of most proper video cameras, DSLRs, and camcorders — and your computer has no way to take that signal in directly. This is the single most common church setup: a decent camera, a capture card, a USB cable to the PC. It's reliable and not expensive.

If you're buying a "real" camera for church, budget for a capture card at the same time. It's the missing link that most first-time streamers forget — the camera and computer won't talk without it.

When you DON'T need one

Capture card vs NDI: the quick take

For one or two cameras near the PC, a capture card is simple and cheap. For several cameras, or cameras far from the streaming computer, NDI over ethernet saves you a tangle of long HDMI runs and a card per camera. Many churches grow from capture cards into NDI as they add cameras.
