Cameras, mounts and switching for church streaming

Camera decisions are where church media budgets disappear fastest, usually in the wrong order. This covers what to buy first, what actually improves the picture, and when a second camera helps rather than just doubling the work.

Buy in this order

Most churches buy a better camera when the problem was never the camera.

  1. Light. A modest camera in good light beats an expensive one in bad light, every time.
  2. A steady mount. A shaky good camera looks worse than a rock-solid cheap one.
  3. Position. Free, and it changes the picture more than most upgrades.
  4. The camera.
  5. A second camera, much later than most churches think.

If your picture looks poor and you have not addressed lighting, a new camera will disappoint you. Sensors need light; there is no setting that replaces it.

Choosing the first camera

Three things matter more than the specification sheet:

Low-light performance. Sanctuaries are dim, and this is the single biggest quality difference between cameras at similar prices.

Clean HDMI output. "Clean" means no menus, focus boxes or battery icons overlaid on the output. Many consumer cameras cannot do it, and the ones that cannot are unusable for streaming.

All-day running. Mains power rather than batteries, and no automatic shutdown after thirty minutes — a limit that exists on many stills cameras for tax reasons and will end your stream mid-sermon.

Resolution is far down the list. A well-exposed, well-focused 1080p picture looks better than a poorly lit 4K one, and 4K costs you bandwidth you probably do not have.

PTZ cameras

A PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) camera is moved remotely from the booth rather than by someone standing behind it.

The case for them is people, not picture. If you cannot reliably staff a camera operator — which is most churches — a PTZ lets one person in the booth reframe between the sermon and the worship team. That is a genuine gain.

The case against is value. At a given price you generally get a smaller sensor and weaker lens than a fixed camera. You are paying for the motors.

Buy one when the alternative is an unstaffed camera locked on a wide shot for ninety minutes. Do not buy one expecting a better image than the fixed camera it replaces.

Mounts and tripods

The least interesting purchase and among the most important.

  • Rated well above the weight it will carry. A tripod at its limit vibrates.
  • A fluid head if anyone will move the camera during a service. A photo ball head cannot pan smoothly and the result is unwatchable.
  • Wall or ceiling mounts for anything permanent. It removes the tripod from a walkway and stops the shot being knocked out of alignment every week.
  • Cable strain relief. The commonest cause of a camera dying mid-service is somebody's foot.

Positioning

The main camera wants to be at roughly the eye level of the person speaking, centred or slightly off centre, far enough back to hold a steady head-and-shoulders shot without being at maximum zoom.

Two common mistakes: mounting high at the back, which looks down on the preacher and shows the top of their head; and putting it on the floor at the front, which looks up their nose. Both read as amateurish and both are free to fix.

A second camera should give a genuinely different shot — a wide of the room, or a side angle — not a slightly different version of the first. If the two shots look similar, the second camera adds work and nothing else.

Watch the background for both: an exit sign, a window blowing out the exposure, or a doorway with people walking through it will undermine an otherwise good shot.

Capture cards

A capture card converts an HDMI or SDI signal into something a computer can read. You need one only if you are bringing a camera in that way.

  • Webcams connect by USB and need nothing.
  • NDI sources arrive over the network and need nothing.
  • HDMI cameras need a capture card, because computers have HDMI out, not in.

For one camera, an inexpensive USB capture device is fine. For several, an internal card with multiple inputs is more reliable than a hub full of adapters.

Switching between cameras

In software first. OBS and vMix both switch between sources with a click or a keystroke. It is free, it is what most churches use, and it works.

A hardware switcher earns its place when you want physical buttons — genuinely faster and less error-prone under pressure — or when you are running more sources than one person can manage on a keyboard.

Running multi-camera without a crew

  • Set up shots that work unattended. A wide that is always usable means you can cut to it and breathe.
  • Cut on speech, not on movement. Change camera when the speaker changes or a section ends, not mid-sentence.
  • Fewer, longer shots. Restless cutting is the most common failing of a new multi-camera church, and a held shot is never wrong.
  • Set exposure and white balance to match before the service. Two cameras with different colour temperatures look worse than one camera.

Frequently asked questions

What camera should a church buy first?
A single camera that handles low light well, outputs clean HDMI, and can run all day on mains power. Resolution matters less than those three. A camcorder or a mirrorless with clean output serves most churches better than a higher-specified camera that overheats or shuts off.
