How to plan your church AV signal flow
Every mysterious church AV problem — the mic that's dead, the camera that won't appear, the stream with no sound — is really the same problem: the signal stopped somewhere along its path. Once you can picture that path, troubleshooting stops being guesswork and becomes a simple walk from source to destination. This is the single most useful mental model in church tech, and it's easier than it looks.
What "signal flow" means
Signal flow is just the route that audio and video take through your system — where each signal starts, what it passes through, and where it ends up. A microphone's signal starts at the capsule, travels down a cable to the mixer, gets balanced and processed, and comes out at the speakers. A camera's picture starts at the lens, goes to a switcher, and out to the projector and the stream.
Nothing in your system is magic. Every sound and every picture follows a path you can draw on paper — and once you've drawn it, you understand your whole system.
The audio chain
Here's the typical journey of the preacher's voice, from mouth to congregation:
That's the room path. For a church that streams, the audio splits off the mixer to a separate feed:

The video chain
Video works the same way — sources into a switcher, out to destinations:

The single most powerful troubleshooting habit in church tech: when something fails, follow the signal from source to destination and find the first point where it disappears. Dead mic? Trace it: capsule → cable → channel → gain → fader → output → amp → speaker. The break is always somewhere on that line.

Once you can picture the flow, three things get dramatically simpler:
- Designing — you know what connects to what, and what each piece needs from the one before it.
- Upgrading — you can see exactly where a new camera, a DI box, or an interface slots in, and what it affects downstream.
- Troubleshooting — instead of panicking, you walk the chain. Nine times out of ten the fault is a cable, a wrong input, or a muted channel — and the map leads you straight to it.

You don't need special software. Sketch it on paper:
- List your sourcesEvery microphone, instrument, camera, and graphics source.
