How to reduce the delay on your church live stream
Someone in the building texts a friend "we just started" — and the online viewer replies "it hasn't started for me yet." That gap is stream latency: the delay between real life and what viewers see. Some delay is normal and unavoidable. Here's what causes it, how much to expect, and how to trim it.
First: delay is not the same as buffering
Two different problems get muddled:
- Delay (latency) — the stream plays smoothly, just a bit behind real time. Mostly normal.

Where the delay comes from
Your video takes a journey, and each stop adds time:

Add it up and 15–30 seconds of total delay is completely normal for YouTube or Facebook. That's just how internet streaming works.
How to actually reduce it
1. Use the platform's low-latency setting
The biggest lever is on the platform itself. YouTube lets you choose a latency setting when you set up the stream — "Low latency" or "Ultra-low latency" cuts the delay noticeably, at the cost of a little buffering resilience. Chasing the absolute lowest delay isn't free — the lower you go, the more a shaky connection shows up as stutter for viewers. Aim for a comfortable middle: low enough that chat feels live, high enough that it stays smooth.
2. Shorten your keyframe interval

3. Get your upload solid

Every heavy effect and filter in your software adds a touch of processing time. Keep the production lean and the delay stays lower.
When you shouldn't fight the delay
