How to fix church live stream buffering and lag

Nothing frustrates online viewers faster than a stream that keeps freezing and re-buffering. The good news: buffering almost always comes down to a handful of causes, and each has a clear fix. Here's how to find yours and stop the stutter.

First, figure out where the problem is

Buffering can happen on your side (sending) or the viewer's side (receiving). A quick check: if lots of viewers complain at once, it's usually your side. If only one person does, it's probably their internet. This guide is about fixing your side — the part you control.

Fix 1: Lower your bitrate

The single most common cause of dropped frames is sending more data than your upload can carry. Drop your bitrate (or step down from 1080p to 720p) and it usually clears instantly. Match your settings to your speed using what bitrate and resolution to use.

Counterintuitive but true: when a stream buffers, the fix is almost always to send less, not more. A clean 720p stream beats a stuttering 1080p one every single time.

Fix 2: Go wired, not Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the hidden killer of church streams. It fluctuates, drops packets, and competes with every phone in the building. Plug the streaming PC into ethernet. This one change fixes more buffering problems than any other. If you must use Wi-Fi, at least read internet speed for church live streaming and give streaming a strong signal.

Fix 3: Take the load off your PC

If your image is choppy and your CPU is maxed out, the encoder is overworking the processor:

  • Switch to hardware encoding (NVENC / AMD / Quick Sync) to offload it to the graphics chip.
  • Close anything you don't need — browsers with many tabs are notorious.

Fix 4: Stop other devices stealing bandwidth
