What bitrate and resolution should you use for a church live stream?

Two settings decide how your stream looks and whether it stays stable: resolution (how many pixels) and bitrate (how much data per second). Get them right and your stream is sharp and smooth. Get them wrong and it's either blurry, buffering, or both. Here's how to pick, in plain terms.

What the two words actually mean

  • Resolution is the size of the picture — 720p is fine, 1080p is sharper. Bigger looks better but needs more data.
  • Bitrate is how much data you send each second, measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). More bitrate means a cleaner picture — up to a point.

The trick is matching them to each other and to your internet upload speed.

Your upload speed sets the ceiling

You can only send as much bitrate as your upload can carry — with room to spare. A safe rule: your stream bitrate should use no more than about half your upload speed, so there's headroom for hiccups. Not sure what you've got? Test it and read internet speed for church live streaming.

If your upload is shaky, drop to 720p rather than pushing 1080p on a weak connection. A steady 720p stream beats a stuttering 1080p one every time.

More bitrate is not always better. Past a sensible point you're just sending bigger files for no visible gain — and risking buffering. Match the bitrate to the table, not to the highest number your software allows.

Frame rate: 30 is usually plenty

For talking-head church services, 30 fps looks perfectly natural and saves bandwidth. Reserve 60 fps for lots of fast motion, which most sermons don't have.

A couple of encoder settings that matter

  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. Most platforms (YouTube, Facebook) expect this.
  • Encoder: if your PC has a good graphics card, hardware encoding (NVENC / AMD / Quick Sync) frees up your processor. Software (x264) can look slightly cleaner but works the CPU harder.

If it still buffers, don't just raise bitrate
