How to choose a projector for your church

The right church projector disappears — the congregation just reads the words. The wrong one is dim, blurry, or awkward to mount, and no amount of software fixes it. Here's how to choose one that fits your room, your light, and your budget, without overspending.

Lumens: the number that matters most

Brightness is measured in lumens, and it's the single biggest factor in a readable image. The right amount depends almost entirely on how much ambient light hits your screen:

  • Dim room, controlled light: 3,000–4,000 lumens can be plenty.
  • Typical sanctuary with some daylight: 4,000–6,000 lumens.
  • Bright room, big windows, or a large screen: 6,000+ lumens.

When in doubt, buy brighter than you think you need. Rooms get brighter (new windows, more stage lighting) and screens get bigger far more often than the reverse. Headroom is cheap insurance.

Resolution: match it to your content

  • 1080p (Full HD) is the sweet spot for most churches today — sharp text, widely supported, and it matches 16:9 stage and stream graphics.
  • WXGA/720p can be fine for smaller rooms and tight budgets.
  • 4K is rarely necessary for scripture and lyrics; spend the money on lumens instead.

Throw distance and lens

Throw is how far the projector sits from the screen for a given image size. Measure your room first, then use the manufacturer's throw calculator:

  • Standard throw — projector well back in the room; watch for people casting shadows.
  • Short throw / ultra-short throw — mounts close to the screen, avoids shadows and eyes-in-the-beam, great for platforms and tight spaces (usually pricier).

Also check for lens shift and zoom, which make mounting far more forgiving.

Contrast ratio

Contrast is what makes text "pop" off the background. A higher contrast ratio means deeper blacks and cleaner letters — important for scripture on dark backgrounds. Don't obsess over headline numbers (they're measured inconsistently), but don't ignore contrast for the sake of raw lumens either.

Lamp vs laser

  • Lamp projectors are cheaper up front but the bulb dims over time and needs replacing (a real recurring cost).
  • Laser projectors cost more initially but hold brightness for ~20,000 hours, turn on instantly, and are effectively maintenance-free. For a projector that runs every week for years, laser often wins on total cost.

Don't forget the screen and the mount

  • A good screen (proper gain, matte surface) can matter as much as the projector.
  • Budget for a solid ceiling or platform mount, cabling, and — if it's a long run — an HDMI extender or NDI rather than a fragile 50-foot cable.
