Church projectors: choosing, sizing and setting one up
A projector is the single most visible piece of equipment in a church, and the one most often bought on the wrong number. This covers the whole decision: whether a projector is even the right answer, how bright it needs to be for your room, what screen to put it on, and how to get scripture sharp enough to read from the back row.
First: projector, TV, or LED wall?
Not every church needs a projector. The honest comparison:

A projector is the flexible default. It scales to any size for less money per inch than anything else, and it disappears when it is off — which matters in a room that is also used for other things.
A TV is simple and bright. No mounting geometry, no lamp, no darkness required. Its limit is size: past about 98 inches you cannot buy one, and in a room deeper than a few rows that is too small for scripture to be readable.
An LED wall is the best picture and the biggest bill. It needs structure, power and a processor, and it makes sense when the room is large, modern, and the budget already accounts for it.
How bright: lumens and the room
Lumens measure brightness. The number you need is decided almost entirely by how much light is in your room, not by the size of your church.
This is where most churches get it wrong. A projector that looks washed out is usually not faulty and not badly focused — it is simply under-specified for the room it is in.

Two adjustments to that table:
Screen size pushes the number up. The same light spread over a bigger surface is dimmer. If you are going large, move up a band.
Watch for "lumens" that are not ANSI. Cheap projectors quote inflated figures using measures nobody else uses. If a listing does not say ANSI, treat its number as marketing rather than specification.
Before spending money on brightness, spend nothing on darkness. A blind on the window behind the platform, or turning off the two lights nearest the screen, is often worth more than an extra 2,000 lumens.
Choosing the screen
You can project onto a painted wall, and plenty of churches do. A real screen is brighter, more even and sharper — a wall absorbs light unevenly and any texture in the paint shows up as noise in the image.

Getting the size right
A workable rule: screen height should be at least one sixth of the distance to the furthest seat. Measure from the screen to the back row, divide by six, and that is your minimum height.
Scripture is text, and text is less forgiving than video. If the calculation puts you between two sizes, take the larger one.
What "gain" means
Screen gain describes how much light a screen reflects back compared with a reference surface. Higher gain looks brighter, but only within a narrower cone — sit off to the side and it dims. In a wide sanctuary, a modest gain that looks the same from every seat beats a high one that only rewards the middle.
Mounting and alignment
Throw distance is how far the projector sits from the screen for a given image width. Every projector has a throw ratio; a short-throw model fills a large screen from close up, which matters in a shallow room or where someone would otherwise walk through the beam.

Getting text sharp
Blurry scripture is the most common complaint, and it is nearly always one of these — in this order.
1. Send the native resolution. A projector has one true resolution, and anything else is scaled. Set the computer's output to match it exactly. This alone fixes most soft text.
2. Walk up and check the focus. Focus from the back of the room and you will get it wrong. Put a verse on screen, stand at the screen, and adjust until the letter edges are crisp.
3. Fix keystone rather than relying on it. Keystone correction squares up an angled image by distorting it digitally, and every pixel it moves is a pixel of sharpness lost. Move the projector so it needs as little as possible.
4. Raise contrast, not brightness. Turning brightness up on a washed-out image usually makes it worse; contrast is what separates letters from their background.
5. Make the text bigger than feels necessary. What looks generous on a laptop is small on a wall seen from thirty metres. If you are unsure, it is too small.
6. Control the light hitting the screen. A single spotlight bleeding onto the screen destroys more contrast than any setting recovers.
7. Check the cable and the lens. A long, cheap HDMI run can soften an image, and a dusty lens scatters light. Both are cheap to eliminate.
The back-row test: put a real verse on screen, walk to the furthest seat, and read it aloud. If you hesitate, the congregation cannot read it either. Do this once a year — projectors dim slowly enough that nobody notices.
Feeding it well
A good projector shows exactly what it is given. Two things decide what that is:
- Resolution and refresh set on the computer to match the projector natively.
- What is generating the image. If a volunteer is building slides for every verse, the bottleneck is not the projector.
That last point is worth sitting with. Most churches upgrade the projector before they upgrade the process, and the process is usually what is failing on a Sunday — the verse arriving late, or in the wrong translation, or not at all.
A buying checklist
- Measure the distance to the back row, divide by six, and that is your minimum screen height.
- Judge your room honestly against the lumens table — with the lights as they actually are on a Sunday, not as they could be.
- Confirm the figure is ANSI lumens.
- Match the screen type to the room, not to the photograph in the listing.
- Check the throw ratio against where the projector can physically go.
- Budget for the mount and the cable. They are always forgotten and never free.
