Projector not detected on Windows? Work through this
The projector is connected, the computer is on, and there is nothing on the wall. This is the order to check things — starting with the cause that is most common and least suspected, and ending with the ones people try first and rarely need.
Start at the projector, not the computer
Check the input selection. This is the most common cause. Projectors have several inputs, and whoever used the room midweek may have changed it. Cycle through the sources with the projector's own remote or buttons until you find yours.
Check the cable is fully seated at both ends. HDMI connectors work loose easily, particularly where a cable hangs under its own weight from a ceiling-mounted projector.
Try the other end of the cable. If there is a wall plate, the fault is often in the run behind it rather than in the visible lead.
Try a different cable. Long HDMI runs fail gradually, and a cable that worked at 1080p last year can stop working after a resolution change.
If it worked last Sunday and not today, and nobody changed a setting, it is physical: a cable moved, an input changed, or something was unplugged to charge a phone. Check those before opening any settings.
Then Windows
Windows + P. The quickest check. Choose Extend. If the option list shows only "PC screen only", Windows genuinely cannot see a second display and you are back to the physical checks.
Settings → System → Display → Detect. Forces a re-scan. Worth doing with the page open while you unplug and reconnect the cable — the hot-plug often triggers detection when the button alone does not.
Check the display arrangement. Occasionally Windows finds the display and places it somewhere unexpected, so windows dragged toward it disappear. The numbered boxes on that page should match where the screens physically are.
Resolution and refresh mismatches
A projector that is detected but shows nothing — or shows "unsupported signal" — is being sent something it cannot display.
- Set the projector's native resolution in Windows display settings. Anything else is scaled at best and rejected at worst.
- Check the refresh rate. 60 Hz is safe; some older projectors will not accept higher.
- Watch for scaling. Windows often applies 125% or 150% on a second display, which is a separate setting from resolution and causes its own oddities. Set it to 100% for the projector.
Graphics drivers
The suspect people jump to first, and the one that is least often responsible — but real.
A Windows update replaced the driver. Common, and it can reset display arrangements and disable outputs. If the projector stopped working immediately after an update, this is likely.
The driver crashed. A restart resolves it. If it happens repeatedly, the driver needs updating — from the graphics manufacturer, not from Windows Update.
A laptop with two graphics chips may be routing the external output through the one you did not expect. If a laptop drives its own screen but no external display, look in the graphics control panel for output settings.
Adapters and docks
Every conversion is a place for this to fail.
- USB-C to HDMI adapters vary enormously in quality, and a cheap one may not carry the resolution you need.
- Docking stations share bandwidth between ports; two displays through one dock may exceed what it can carry.
- HDMI splitters and switches in the signal path introduce handshake problems that look exactly like a dead cable.
If there is an adapter or dock in the chain, take it out and connect directly as a test. It is the fastest way to find out whether it is the culprit.
When it works but keeps dropping out
Different fault, different causes:
- A marginal cable, particularly a long run. Intermittent is the classic symptom of a cable near its limit.
- Power saving turning the display off. Check Windows power settings and the projector's own standby timer.
- Overheating, in a projector with a blocked filter or vent. Worth cleaning annually anyway.
Preventing it
- Label and secure the cables, so a tidy-up cannot change anything.
- Note the correct input on a card in the booth, so nobody has to guess.
- Check it as part of start-up every week — the checklist in run sheets and checklists.
- Do not update Windows in the week before a big service.

- Most often the projector is on the wrong input, or the cable is not fully seated. After that: Windows has not re-detected the display, the graphics driver has crashed or updated, or the resolution being sent is one the projector cannot accept. Work through those in that order.

- Open Settings, System, Display and click Detect, or press Windows + P and choose Extend. If the display still does not appear, unplug and reconnect the cable while Windows is open on that page — a hot-plug often triggers detection when Detect alone does not.
- Why does my projector say 'no signal' when the cable is connected?
- The projector is usually on a different input, or the computer is not outputting to that port. Cycle the projector's source selection, and check Windows + P is set to Extend or Duplicate rather than 'PC screen only'.

- Almost always something physical — a cable moved when the booth was tidied, or a different input selected by whoever used the room midweek. A Windows update that replaced the graphics driver is the second suspect.
