How to reduce echo and reverb in a church room
Many churches meet in beautiful, hard-surfaced rooms — high ceilings, stone or plaster walls, big windows. They look wonderful and sound terrible: speech bounces around until it's a muddy blur. Turning up the volume only makes the echo louder. Here's how to actually tame it, without a huge budget.
Why hard rooms sound bad
Sound bounces off hard surfaces. In a room full of bare walls, tile, glass, and a high ceiling, every word reflects off dozens of surfaces and arrives at your ears again and again, slightly delayed. Those overlapping reflections — reverb — smear speech until it's hard to follow. The preacher can be at a perfect volume and still be unintelligible.
Acoustics and volume are different problems. If your room echoes, adding volume makes it worse, not better. The fix is to absorb reflections and aim sound carefully — not to push more level into the room.
The fix: add soft surfaces
Reverb is tamed by soft, absorbent materials. You don't need to cover every surface — targeting the worst reflective areas makes a big difference:
