How to set gain structure on a church sound system
Gain structure is the least glamorous, most important skill in church audio. Get it right and your system is clear, strong, and easy to mix. Get it wrong and you fight hiss, distortion, and feedback all service long. The good news: it's simple once you understand the idea.
What "gain structure" means
Your sound passes through several stages — the input gain on a channel, the channel fader, the main output, the amplifier. Gain structure is setting the level correctly at each stage so the signal is strong and clean all the way through. The most important one is the input gain (sometimes called trim or gain) at the very start of each channel.
Set it well and everything downstream is easy. Set it badly and no amount of fader-riding fixes it.
Why it matters so much
- Too low at the input, and you'll crank faders and outputs to compensate — which raises the noise floor and adds hiss.
- Too high, and the signal distorts and sounds harsh, and you're closer to feedback.
- Just right, and you have a strong, clean signal with room to move — headroom.
The golden rule: fix the level at the input first. If a channel sounds weak or noisy, don't reach for the fader or the master — go back to the input gain and set it properly. Everything downstream gets easier once the input is right.
