What laptop do you need for church presentation and streaming?

"What computer do we need?" is one of the most-asked questions in church media — and the answers online are all over the place. The honest truth: it depends entirely on whether you're just showing slides, or running a full stream. Here's what actually matters, without the marketing noise.

Match the machine to the job

A slides-only laptop and a streaming machine are very different animals. Buying a streaming beast for slides wastes money; buying a slides laptop for streaming ends in stutter. Decide which job first.

The specs that actually matter

  • Processor (CPU). This does the heavy lifting for streaming. For slides it barely matters; for streaming, more cores means smoother encoding.
  • RAM. 8 GB is enough for presentation. Jump to 16 GB the moment streaming, browser tabs, and graphics are involved.
  • Graphics (GPU). A dedicated graphics chip with a hardware encoder (NVENC on NVIDIA, or Quick Sync/AMD) takes the streaming load off the CPU. Big deal for streaming, irrelevant for slides.
  • Ports. You need enough outputs for your projector/screen and your setup. A second display output is what makes dual-monitor presentation possible.
  • Ethernet. For streaming, a wired network port (or a USB adapter) beats Wi-Fi every time.

The most common mistake is under-buying RAM and over-buying looks. A thin, pretty ultrabook with 8 GB will choke on a stream; a boring, well-cooled machine with 16 GB and a real GPU will run all day. Buy boring and capable.

For a fixed booth, a desktop usually gives more power per dollar, better cooling, and easier upgrades. Choose a laptop when you genuinely need to move the machine, or a plant packs up each week.
